The historic windmills of Lefkada island
The windmill is one of the symbols of Greek islands, it has appeared in the area between the 12th and 13th century.

In Lefkada, the construction of the mills started later- in the era of the Venetian Rule. Initially, there used to be up to 12 windmills, and only 5 have remained at Gyra area and Agios Ioannis- both not far from the city of Lefkada.
The Orlof's windmill is left in the best condition and has a bar with a stunning sea-view. The windmills of this areas have Russian names because they used to grind the grain imported from Russia until the beginning of 20th century.
The last active windmill stopped working only in 1954.
